Mathare Fire

Dear Friends

Friday morning, 11-11-2011, the ghetto Mathare, Nairobi, Kenya, was hit by a ravaging fire that left 300 families homeless. Many of our Maji Mazuri members have to start life from zero again. Luckily, nobody got hurt physically but the social and economic loss is beyond measure.
The fire was cost by a bad electricity connection that short-circuited. There was no water since the taps in the ghetto had been dry for over a week. One fire brigade arrived after two hours but soon was out of water too. More than a 1000 people lost everything and now have to sleep outside.
We kindly ask for your help to support these families to rebuild their lives.

SHUJAA WA AMANI | Warriors of Peace

Saturday the 11th of June, history was written in Mathare Valley. For the first time youth from youth groups (Maji Mazuri and SPI) and youth from bazes are working together to promote peace, to strengthen relationships and build bridges between antagonistic groups. We have worked, strived, struggled to see this day come, for so long. Mathare will not be the same after this wonderful event. The youth from rowe and other bazes finally are included, not marginalised and excluded, and taken as fellow peers, as agents of peace and development instead of just young men for hire … for an impressions pls read here
