Newsflash | Gender

Wendy De Macker is training the Mathare Team on addressing the challenges and temptations members of the Teenz Group face growing up. We focus mostly on issues concerning Identity & Sexuality. We will first train the girls and the boys separate, and look at how they can become more aware of their own sexuality in relation to their identity, and to each other.

Newsflash | Green Heroes

The environmental project of the Maji Mazuri Youth Group ‘Green Heroes’ is funded by Duara, and is making a vital impact in the ghetto Mathare. Every Saturday the youth organize cleanups, pick up garbage and sensitize the community about hygiene and safety. This project has now teamed up with UNEP, a major achievement. Wendy De Macker will join the Green Heroes in their weekly activities and at the same time she will help them expand and raise funds for the project.

Newsflash | Food 4 Thought

The Duara project ‘Food 4 Thought’ provides over 300 children, attending the Maji Mazuri Headstart School in the ghetto Mathare, with a daily nutritious meal. Over the past year food prices have almost doubled, making it more difficult for Maji Mazuri to meet these needs of the students, hence making it even more urgent for Duara to support this project. Marcelle will assist the school in expanding this project to enable more children in Mathare to benefit.

Newsflash | Mazungumzo Mtaani

One of the projects Naomi van Stapele will work on with the Mathare team is ‘conversations in the ghetto’ (mazungumzo mtaani). These dialogues bring antagonistic groups together and encourage debates on topical issues that will help to share experiences and heal rifts. She will also work with the team towards making a documentary of this project that will be screened throughout the ghetto to promote peace in the run-up to the next elections.

Newsflash | Equip

After completing the first introduction in May 2011, Wendy De Macker will now continue with the implementation of the counseling method Equip for delinquent youth. Equip is a groups counseling method that challenges thinking errors and tackles delinquent behavior. She will train the Mathare team to introduce this method to the Maji Mazuri Youth Group, and they will translate the method to match it with the specific environment of the Mathare ghetto.

Newsflash | STOP the BULLET!

Naomi van Stapele, chair of Duara, will work with the Mathare team on further implementing STOP the BULLET!, a platform of different community based organizations engaged in peace promotion activities in the Mathare ghetto. This is a vital platform seeing that it is an election year and all members are adamant to avoid the violence that followed the last elections in 2007.

Fire in Mathare | 3 people died

In the night of Thursday the 22th of March, another fire in the ghetto appeared. The fifth this year. In total more than 1000 houses have been burned down in less than 3 months! Everything people built up, destroyed. This time, two children and an elderly man died. Of course people demonstrated. When will they be allowed to live in safety and in dignity? Why is the government building flyovers and super highways while it is ignoring the living condi…tions of millions of people, people who live without indoor plumbing, garbage collection, and proper water and electricity connections in tiny iron sheet houses, for which they have to pay astronomically high rents. We need to act together. My heart goes out to the more than 300 families who lost children, relatives and all their belongings. See more: Capital News

We kindly ask for your help to support these families to rebuild their lives.

R.I.P. Nyash Mzukah Kurukah

A man who was completely innocent, offered himself as a sacrifice for the good of others, including his enemies, and became the ransom of the world. It was a perfect act.

R.I.P Bro – soulbrother Pato Shobz – Ghetto Films Nairobi

Nyash Mzukah Kurukah: our friend has been shot dead in Kenya yesterday evening. We can’t believe this has happened, we are in shock. We can’t stop thinking about Pato Shobz, his friends, his wife, 2 children and family. The unmeasurable void he left behind, also for Nairobi and Kenya as a whole! He was a true warrior of peace and justice, he was an inspirational and wise leader in his community, he achieved unimaginable hights for his community, a poineer in every sense of the word. His death cannot go unnoticed, in his name we need to continue his struggle and fight for justice and freedom in Nairobi ghettos, for the right to live, build a life and grow old! We love you, Nyash.
