School exercise in Mathare Valley

Duara Projects

“ … Maij Mazuri has stopped many bullets for our children. The bullets of crime and violence, the bullets of drugs and alcohol, the bullets of poverty. My son grew up in and has been trained by Maji Mazuri and through Maji Mazuri he has been able to open a shop. He takes care of me now while I see other sons of women who are addicted to drugs and alcohol and who participate in violence and crime. I have seen so many of them die from police bullets. We want to stop the bullets that hurt our children, we need to include them in Maji Mazuri … ”
Mama Dani (mother of a youth member | Maji Mazuri)

Maji Mazuri and Duara Foundation work together in realising a new and exiting program for youth in the ghetto: the Maji Mazuri Education and Talent Program. Duara Foundation launches a campaign to raise funds for this project with the slogan:

Stop the Bullet!
Give Talent a Chance.

Objective
Our overall aim is to fight the destructive low self-image that youth from a very young age develop when they grow up in a ghetto community such as Mathare Valley. This low self-image drives from stereotypes prevalent in Kenyan society about ghetto youth and which is internalised by youth in the process of identity construction. The internalisation of this inferiority status youth results in a lack of faith in their individual strength and talents, and hence any opportunity for social and economic development is paralysed beforehand. We aim to work from strength, not from weakness, as we profoundly believe in the strength and talents of each and every individual in society.

YOU can Stop the Bullet!
Read here (in Dutch) how you can support this Talent Program, and how you can give youth in Mathare a chance to develop their talents. Here you can download the (English written) report on The Maji Mazuri Education and Talent Program from August 2010 till May 2011 .
