Stop the Bullet!
The post-election violence that followed the 2007 General Elections scorched Mathare Valley, and has opened the eyes of many. The unexpected has happened, and the need to prevent future conflicts is crucial. Many youth in Mathare Valley were involved in the violence as perpetrators, as victims or as both.
This highlights the fact that programs geared towards peace promotion need to work together with the youth who are often mobilised in such violence. Organisations need to involve their ideas, their strategies and their visions in the design and in the implementation of Peace Promotion Projects. In the end, this will create ownership among the youth in the community.
Until now, there are no NGO-initiatives on conflict resolution, peace building, civic education, counseling and economic/educational prospects that reach these informal groups.
STOP the BULLET! is based on these conclusions. This is a long-term peace promotion program, developed by gangs and local CBO’s, that seeks to prevent violence, and it is currently implemented under the auspices of Duara Foundation.
